PROINVERSION boosts the development of seven regional cable cars for more than US$ 460 million
Lima, May 8, 2025.- The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN), in close coordination with national government entities, as well as regional and local authorities, has been actively promoting the development of seven cable car projects in the regions, with an estimated investment of US$ 461 million.
Mario Hernández, director of the Special Projects Division of PROINVERSIÓN, commented that these initiatives seek to value the cultural and natural heritage of the country, decentralize tourism and stimulate local economies. The regional cable cars are located in Cusco, Apurímac, Áncash, Apurímac, Moquegua and Puno.
Of the seven projects, four will be developed in Cusco, an emblematic region of cultural tourism in the country. Among them stands out the Cable Car to Choquequirao, whose award is scheduled for this year and represents an estimated investment of US$ 261 million. This modern 10.6 km long cable transport system will also benefit the Apurímac region, reducing the access time to the Choquequirao Archaeological Monument from more than two days to just 20 minutes. It is estimated that this project will attract more than one million visitors annually, consolidating Choquequirao as a new international tourist hub.
Another project in Cusco is the Collpani Grande – Viscachani Astronomical Observatory Cable Car, in the Machupicchu district. With a route of 3.6 km and an approximate investment of US$ 40 million, it seeks to decentralize tourism in the region by connecting a site of high cultural, scientific, and landscape value.
The Urubamba tourist cable car will also be developed, connecting Quespihuanca, near the city's Main Square, with the Querocancha Archaeological Site. With an estimated investment of US$35 million, this initiative will strengthen the tourist infrastructure in one of the most visited areas of the Sacred Valley.
The fourth project in the region is the Waqrapukara Cable Car, in the Acomayo province, which will provide access to one of the most impressive and least explored archaeological centers in the country. Its execution would require an approximate investment of US$35 million.
"For the development of the three cable cars in Cusco (Collpani, Urubamba and Waqrapukara), PROINVERSIÓN, the Regional Government of Cusco and the provincial municipalities will soon sign an agreement to develop the project profile on Invierte.pe and incorporate it into the process of promoting private investment through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) modality," said Mario Hernández, in an interview with Andina Tv Online.
In Puno, the Titicaca Lake – Cerro Azoguini Cable Car has been projected, with an estimated investment of US$30 million. This system will connect the lakeside port with one of the main natural viewpoints in the region, providing a panoramic and unique tourist experience. The project already has an agreement signed between PROINVERSIÓN, the Provincial Municipality of Puno and the Regional Government, so that PROINVERSIÓN is in charge of conducting the pre-investment studies of the Cable Car and the process of promoting private investment through the PPP modality.
In Áncash, the Llanganuco Lagoon – Huascarán Mountain Cable Car will be developed, within the Huascarán National Park. This US$25 million initiative aims to strengthen nature and adventure tourism, while generating employment and promoting sustainable development in the region.
Meanwhile, Moquegua will host the Cerro Baúl Cable Car, in the district of Torata, which will improve access to an ancient pre-Inca citadel declared a Cultural Heritage Site of the Nation. With an estimated investment of US$ 35 million, the project aims to diversify the regional tourism offer and directly benefit local communities.
"These cable cars will allow more Peruvians and visitors from around the world to access unique destinations in a safe, fast, and sustainable way." It is a commitment to the decentralized development of the country”, emphasized the Special Director of Projects of PROINVERSIÓN.
Finally, the official mentioned that, in Metropolitan Lima, they have been working together with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and the Urban Transport Authority (ATU) on the development of two cable cars: one in San Juan de Lurigancho and another in El Agustino district.
