PROINVERSIÓN AND MINCETUR ADVANCE WITH THE SOCIALIZATION OF THE CHOQUEQUIRAO CABLE CAR PROJECT
Lima, March 24, 2025.- The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) continue with the socialization process of the project “Improving Public Tourist Services at the Choquequirao Archaeological Park.”
The PROINVERSIÓN team, led by the project director, Aldo Laderas, and the MINCETUR team, led by the director of Tourism Products and Destinations, Jorge Salguero, gave an informative talk in the district of Santa Teresa, province of La Convención (Cusco). During the session, they explained the objectives and components of the integral project, detailing the location of the stations and tourist routes, as well as the benefits it will bring to the local population.
The event was attended by the mayor of the province of La Convención, Alex Curi; the mayor of the district of Santa Teresa, Edgar Lasteros; representatives of the communities of Yanama and Totora; the mayor of the towns of the Salkantay basin; members of the Peasant's defense Organization of Santa Teresa; the justice of the peace, among other local stakeholders.
During the session, PROINVERSIÓN's Project Director, Aldo Laderas, explained that the Choquequirao Cable Car (PPP component of the integral project) seeks to integrate the local population into the economic dynamics that it will generate, and emphasized that the project is about to be tendered.
For its part, MINCETUR proposed, as part of the integral project, the articulation and improvement of roads to strengthen trekking services, through the National Copesco Plan, for the benefit of the communities; it also announced the implementation of training programs to incorporate the population into the tourism value chain.
The local authorities of La Convención and Santa Teresa highlighted the relevance of the project for their jurisdictions because it will contribute to local development and land use planning, so they emphasize the need to continue with the property updating and archaeological studies to advance in the development process of the project.
The Choquequirao Cable Car project, currently being structured as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), seeks to improve the tourist experience at the Choquequirao Archaeological Monument (MACH) with an estimated investment of US$ 261 million. It is expected to significantly reduce travel time and increase the number of tourists to one million per year, boosting tourism, the local economy, and job creation in Cusco and Apurímac.
The project includes two cable car sections: from Cusco (Yanama) with stations at Abra San Juan, Maizal and Abra Choquequirao; and from Apurímac (Huanipaca), with stations at Kiuñalla and Unión, crossing the Apurimac River canyon. In addition, tourist routes and central stations will be built in each region.
It will be executed under strict cultural and environmental protection standards. An economic impact of over S/ 400 million annually and the generation of 250,000 jobs in tourism, commerce, and handicrafts is estimated, consolidating Choquequirao as a world-renowned destination.
