PROINVERSIÓN, MINCETUR and MEF socialize Choquequirao Cable Car project in Cusco
Cusco, June 26, 2025.- In the presence of regional and local authorities, social leaders and representatives of the private sector, the Peruvian Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN), the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), socialized the technical, financial and legal aspects of the Choquequirao Cable Car, which will be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) modality to strengthen tourism to this archaeological monument, for the benefit of the regions of Cusco and Apurímac.
The project called “Improving Public Tourist Services at the Choquequirao Archaeological Park” has an estimated investment of US$ 261 million and is expected to attract more than one million visitors per year, as travel time will be reduced from more than two days to only 20 minutes by means of a modern cable transportation system of more than 10.6 kilometers in length, which will connect several sections from both regions involved.
The event was headed by the regional governor of Cusco, Werner Salcedo; the provincial mayor of Cusco, Luis Pantoja Calvo; the head of PROINVERSIÓN, Luis Del Carpio; the director of the Special Projects Division, Mario Hernández; the project director, Aldo Laderas; the director of the Directorate of Private Investment Promotion Policy (MEF), Joaquín Vásquez; the general director of Tourism Strategy (MINCETUR), Luis Guillén; congressman Luis Aragón; as well as provincial and district mayors and social actors from the project's areas of influence.
The executive director of PROINVERSIÓN, Luis Del Carpio, highlighted the confidence of private investors in the PPP system. “Choquequirao is a gift from Cusco to the world and, thanks to this cable car project, more people will be able to quickly approach a new tourist destination, that is why today we met with the population so that they know that this project is for them and know all the benefits that this modern infrastructure brings with it,” he said.
In turn, the regional governor of Cusco, Werner Salcedo, welcomed the inter-institutional efforts to achieve this new tourist infrastructure, which will generate further improvements in the surrounding areas. He also mentioned that Cusco embraces investments and invited the population to promptly recognize the opportunities that will begin to present themselves with the arrival of new visitors.
For his part, the provincial mayor of Cusco, Luis Pantoja Calvo, highlighted the project because it will strengthen the arrival of new tourists to the region, which today already receives more than four million visitors a year. He also welcomed the efforts of the agency that has also been supporting Choquequirao with various investment projects for the benefit of the citizens of the imperial capital.
This project is expected to inject more than S/ 400 million annually into the national economy, boosting sectors such as lodging, food, tourist transportation, local commerce, guide services, handicrafts and other activities related to tourism.
Its award is scheduled for the last quarter of 2025 and will represent a milestone for the tourism sector, as it will not only position this archaeological monument, but will also help promote the southern circuits and attractions such as Machu Picchu, Urubamba Valley, Ollantaytambo, Salkantay snow covered Mountain, and Huamantay Lagoon in Cusco and the National Sanctuary of Ampay and Piedra de Saywite in Apurímac in Apurimac.
