JULIO VELARDE IS ELECTED AS CENTRAL BANKER OF THE AMERICAS 2022 BY FINANCIAL TIMES

January 6, 2022 - Lima.- It is the third award that the publisher gives to the president of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), after in 2020 he was awarded as Central Banker of the Americas and in 2015 as the Central Banker of the Year worldwide.

The president of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), Julio Velarde, was awarded as the Central Banker of the Americas of the Year 2022 by the international magazine The Banker, of the Financial Times publishing group, in recognition of his outstanding work in 2021.

This is the third award that The Banker gives to Julio Velarde, after in 2020 he was awarded as Central Banker of the Americas and after distinguishing him in 2015 as the Central Banker of the Year worldwide.

The London-based finance magazine provides this recognition to the best-managed central bank governors to stimulate growth and stabilize their economies.

"Few in Latin America have held office and enjoyed sustained international respect for as long as Julio Velarde. At the helm of the Central Bank of Peru since 2006, Velarde has remained a reassuring figure, both in political and economic terms, even during turbulent times. During his tenure, the country has been led by seven different presidents," The Banker said.

The Banker highlighted Velarde's handling of dealing with the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. "The fall in economic activity had serious implications for liquidity, to which the central bank responded with swift measures, including not only considerable direct monetary injections to support the payment system, but also a reduction in the policy rate historically to low levels."

The magazine said it does not offer a lifetime achievement award to central bank governors, but if it did, Velarde would be a strong candidate for the Latin American award.

The president of the BCR has also been recognized as Central Banker of the Year 2016 for Latin America by Global Markets, Central Bank Governor of the Year 2016 by LatinFinance, as well as the Best Central Banker in 2015 and 2016 by Global Finance; Central Banker of the Year for Latin America for Emerging Market in 2010, in addition to the aforementioned recognitions as Central Banker of the Year worldwide and Central Banker of the Americas, in the years 2015 and 2020, respectively, by The Banker.
