PROINVERSIÓN: More Than US$ 400 Million in Electricity Projects Will Strengthen Supply in Southern Peru

Projects in Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, Tacna, and Ayacucho will improve access to energy and support the economic growth of the southern macro-region.

Lima, April 16, 2026.- During the Perú Energía Sur 2026 event held in Arequipa, the Private Investment Promotion Agency, PROINVERSIÓN, reaffirmed its role in strengthening electricity supply in southern Peru, highlighting the sector’s progress, challenges, and outlook alongside authorities and industry experts.

During his participation, the Executive Director of PROINVERSIÓN, Luis Del Carpio, announced that the Agency is promoting a portfolio of electricity projects in the southern region valued at more than US$ 400 million, aimed at improving the reliability of the electrical system and supporting growing energy demand in these regions.
Among the main initiatives is the Las Joyas Photovoltaic Plant project in Arequipa, with an estimated investment of US$ 252 million, which will contribute to diversifying the energy matrix through renewable energy sources.

Likewise, in the Puno region, three electricity transmission projects are being developed for a total of US$ 135 million, linked to the San Román–Yocara–Maravilla (Juliaca), Nueva San Gabán–Puerto Maldonado, and Tintaya Nueva–Nueva San Gabán transmission lines, including expansions and associated substations.

In Tacna, the Agency is promoting the “220 kV Los Héroes – Garita Transmission Line” project, valued at US$ 36 million, while in Ayacucho it is advancing the “Muyurina – Mollepata Transmission Line” project, valued at US$ 10 million. In addition, projects are being developed in Cusco as part of the strengthening of the electricity transmission system in southern Peru.

It was also highlighted that the amendment for the massification of natural gas in seven regions — Cusco, Puno, Ayacucho, Junín, Apurímac, Ucayali, and Huancavelica — is currently under evaluation, which will expand access to this resource to more than 200,000 beneficiaries. Complementarily, the natural gas distribution project in the southwest of the country, covering the regions of Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna, is also being promoted.

INVESTMENT BETWEEN 2002 AND 2025

During the event, PROINVERSIÓN also highlighted its track record in the electricity sector, emphasizing its participation in the development of generation and transmission projects that have significantly expanded the coverage and reliability of electricity services nationwide.

Between 2002 and 2025, the Agency awarded 75 electricity sector projects under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and Asset Projects (PA) modalities, for a total amount of US$ 10.806 billion. This effort has enabled the national electricity transmission network to triple in size, increasing from 9,700 km to more than 30,000 km.

In southern Peru, PROINVERSIÓN has awarded 28 projects worth more than US$ 4.7 billion, consolidating its contribution to the energy development of departments such as Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, Moquegua, Ayacucho, Apurímac, Tacna, and Huancavelica.

Finally, the Agency reported that, nationwide, it expects to award a total of 18 electricity projects during 2026, amounting to US$ 903 million, including major transmission initiatives grouped under Transmission Plan Groups 1 and 2.
