PROINVERSIÓN begins construction of the “Twin Tunnel” to connect Peru with Brazil and Asia

The S/ 217 million project is being delivered through the Works for Taxes mechanism and will benefit more than 1.2 million people.

Arequipa, July 20, 2026 – The executive president of the Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN), Luis Del Carpio, and the regional governor of Arequipa, Rohel Sánchez, participated in the start of construction of the twin tunnel of the Arequipa – La Joya road, a strategic project that will strengthen the road integration of the south of the country and contribute to consolidating the Southern Logistics Corridor, facilitating the commercial connection of Peru with Brazil and the Asian markets.

The project, which will benefit more than 1.2 million inhabitants, is being carried out through the Works for Taxes mechanism, with an investment of S/ 217 million, thanks to the joint work of the Regional Government of Arequipa, the Urbi Proyectos consortium, Yura S.A., Cerro Verde mining company and Interbank.

“Today we begin a new stage for the development of the south of the country. This tunnel will be a key element in consolidating integration with Brazil and opening up greater opportunities for trade with Asia. At PROINVERSIÓN we continue working to ensure that investments reach the regions and become infrastructure that improves competitiveness, generates employment and transforms people’s lives,” highlighted the head of the Agency, Luis Del Carpio.

The modern twin tunnel will be 1.5 kilometers long and will feature state-of-the-art ventilation, drainage, lighting, safety and signaling systems, guaranteeing safer, more efficient and continuous transit between Arequipa and La Joya. It will also reduce travel times, improve the flow of people and goods, and help to boost the region’s economic activity by generating employment during its construction.

“Arequipa remains one of the leading regions in the execution of projects through the Works for Taxes mechanism,” the head of the Agency stated at the end, congratulating the authorities on their work and synergy. This approach continues to consolidate itself as one of the main alternatives to accelerate the closing of gaps in infrastructure and public services through coordinated work between the State and private companies, also in a decentralized manner.
