Lima, March 28, 2025.- The Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) has announced a national and international tender for comprehensive projects to obtain the successful bid of the Choquequirao Cable Car project, with the aim of awarding the contract in the last quarter of this year.
The tender is open to local, national, and international participants who meet the minimum requirements to guarantee the quality of the project’s implementation and operation, as well as the safety of tourists.
The project, called “Improving Public Tourist Services at the Choquequirao Archaeological Park,” will be carried out as a public-private partnership (PPP) and has completed its structuring phase, in which the project risks were identified and assigned, and the initial version of the contract was designed, among other things.
With an estimated investment of US$261 million, the project aims to improve the tourist experience at the Choquequirao Archaeological Monument by granting a concession to a private operator, who will be responsible for the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of a cable car and bus transport system that will facilitate access and increase visitor comfort.
The tender specifications and other project documents are available to interested parties on the PROINVERSIÓN institutional website at the following link: https://www.investinperu.pe/es/app/DatosProyecto?idAPProyecto=29
Impacts of the Choquequirao Cable Car
The implementation of this project will significantly reduce travel time, allowing more tourists to visit Choquequirao. This will boost tourism in Cusco and Apurímac, promote local economic development, and generate new employment opportunities in sectors such as tourism, handicrafts, and gastronomy.
Currently, Choquequirao receives approximately 8,000 tourists per year, mostly young people between the ages of 20 and 35, due to the demanding four-day (round trip) trek, which limits its access to a wider audience. With the implementation of the project, the number of visitors would exceed one million per year.
This initiative will position Peru as a diverse tourist destination and consolidate Choquequirao as a world-renowned attraction, complementing the archaeological offerings of Machu Picchu and promoting sustainable development in the regions of Cusco and Apurímac.
In addition to the cable transport system, various other works will be carried out, such as the construction of tourist roads, the central stations in Cusco (Yanama) and Apurímac (Huanipaca), and the cable car stations themselves, including departure, arrival, and intermediate stations.
The project will be developed under strict cultural and environmental protection standards to ensure the preservation of the archaeological remains and natural environment of Choquequirao.
The social benefits are estimated to exceed S/ 400 million per year and generate 250,000 jobs, positively impacting sectors such as lodging, food, tourist transport, local commerce, guide services, and handicrafts, thus strengthening the regional economy and generating new opportunities for the local communities of Cusco and Apurímac.
