Lima, April 24, 2025.- The Peruvian Private Investment Promotion Agency (PROINVERSIÓN) and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) submitted the technical, financial, and legal scope of the Choquequirao Cable Car project to investors and regional and local authorities. The project will be carried out under a public-private partnership (PPP) and seeks to strengthen tourism to this archaeological monument, benefiting the regions of Cusco and Apurímac.
The project, called “Improving Public Tourism Services at the Choquequirao Archaeological Park,” has an estimated investment of US$261 million and is expected to attract more than one million visitors per year, as travel time will be reduced from more than two days to just 20 minutes thanks to a modern cable transport system over 10.6 kilometers long, which will connect several sections from both regions involved.
The presentation event was led by the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, and attended by the Minister of Economy and Finance, José Salardi, the Minister of MINCETUR, Desilú León, and the Executive Director of PROINVERSIÓN, Luis Del Carpio. Also participating were the regional governor of Cusco, Werner Salcedo, the regional governor of Apurímac, Percy Godoy, as well as provincial and district mayors and social actors from the project’s areas of influence.
The head of state highlighted the enhancement of the Archaeological Monument through the Cable Car project and called on private investors to participate in the process, so that this architectural gem, described by experts as the sister of Machu Picchu, can soon become a reality.
For his part, the head of PROINVERSIÓN, Luis Del Carpio, highlighted the confidence of private investors in the PPP system and in the country, as well as the support of President Dina Boluarte’s government for large investment projects through public-private partnerships. As a result of this confidence, between 2023 and the first quarter of 2025, PROINVERSIÓN has awarded 30 projects worth more than US$11 billion in strategic sectors such as ports, roads, health, sanitation, energy, and mining, among others,” said Luis Del Carpio. “Today we mark a landmark milestone in the history of the country, Cusco, and Apurímac with the launch of the Choquequirao Cable Car. We are all working to award it this year and make it a reality in the shortest time possible,” he added.
Approximately 100 investors, representatives of private companies, cable car project operators, builders, consultants, representatives of business associations, among others, participated in the event.
The project is expected to inject more than S/ 400 million annually into the national economy, boosting sectors such as lodging, food, tourist transportation, local commerce, guide services, handicrafts, and other tourism-related activities.
The contract is expected to be awarded in the last quarter of 2025 and will represent a milestone for the tourism sector, as it will not only position this archaeological monument as a tourist destination, but will also help promote southern circuits and attractions such as Machu Picchu, Urubamba Valley, Ollantaytambo, Nevado de Salkantay, and Laguna de Huamantay in Cusco, and the Ampay National Sanctuary and Piedra de Saywite in Apurímac.
