Lima, May 261, 2021.- With the help of Huawei, the Peruvian mine is preparing for the great technological leap to the new generation of telecommunications.
The Toquepala mine, located in the department of Tacna, continues to improve its technological infrastructure with the acquisition of a new LTE network that will bring fourth generation connectivity to its operation and will allow them to be at the forefront of the use of new and advanced technologies within the mining sector.
Toquepala, operated by Southern Peru Copper Corporation, a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico S.A. de C.V., is the second mine in the world - after China - to have a dual core 5G redundant network, provided by Huawei.
Peru already has 6 LTE networks. The most important aspect of this contribution is that the network will be built with an independent 5G core, the first of its kind in the country. For now, fourth generation technology will pass through these networks and, when Peruvian regulation permits, fifth generation will follow.
“This decision to work with Huawei allows us to advance digitization towards Mining 4.0, reinforcing the automation of our processes, making it possible to remotely perform actions that are now face-to-face in a broad spectrum, which results in a more efficient management of the mine. It is very important that the possibilities of new technologies are always on our radar and that we are at the forefront,” said Jorge Hugo Meza, Chief Operating Officer of Southern Peru Copper Corporation.
The representative pointed out that this implementation is demanded by new industrial technologies and is part of what is known as smart mining. Thanks to this technology, mining operations will be able to introduce: autonomous trucks, shovels with smart ore selection, remote control for critical operations, augmented reality technologies, among others.
Southern Peru chose Huawei for this important step because of its constant evolution towards smart mining. The Asian company is an expert in several areas and stands out for its expertise in solutions for the mining sector. In fact, in China they are pioneers in 5G mining. Huawei has the largest number of contributions to 3GPP developments and is one of the strongest suppliers in Peru.
Understanding how important the mining industry is for Peru, Huawei has created a specific team dedicated only to address Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Operation and Control Technologies (OT) issues in the mining sector, becoming one of the strongest wireless technology providers in the country, not only as a hardware and software provider, but also as a service partner for all implementations, operations and maintenance. This is a landmark deployment and shows the enormous potential of the 5G network for our country’s mining industry.
Bao Getang, CEO of Huawei Peru, said that fourth-generation networks have achieved greater digitization of processes and fifth-generation networks will achieve the great leap from digitization to automation. Smart mining will make it possible to automate and streamline processes, i.e. operations can be carried out remotely, increasing the safety of people and production within the deposit.
“Toquepala is the example for what awaits us in a short time, we continue innovating for the improvement and development of local mining. Smart mining interconnects everything that would become the IoT (Internet of Things) with everything in the same network and meets three essential factors: everything is measurable, smart and connected," he emphasized.
5G networks will be one of the most important key technologies in the new era of autonomous and remote mining and now Toquepala is taking a big step towards that goal: to promote this network and to be a reference in the region on how 5G benefits the industry. “It will enable a high-tech network that will be able to support many more processes within the network and added to the new changes here in Peru we will have a very high-speed network,” said Bao.
In this way, both companies are working together with the commitment to innovate and develop the mining sector. It should be noted that Huawei is positioned as the first and leading provider to implement the 5G network in this sector, which will contribute to the economy of the country and the world with the aim of digitizing mining in favor of Peru.
