WB: PERUVIAN ECONOMY WILL GROW 7.6% IN 2021

In the current year, Peru’s economic activity will grow 7.6% and will be one of the fastest growing in Latin America and the Caribbean, forecasted the World Bank (WB).
According to its World Economic Outlook report for January 2021, the decline in our country's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to have fallen to 12% in 2020.

“Peru’s economy is on track to recover to 7.6% this year after experiencing one of the deepest recessions in the region in 2020, amid a particularly large outbreak of covid-19,” it specified.

The multilateral agency noted that the production increase in 2021 will improve thanks to the increase in the price of copper and the ongoing flexible monetary policy.

Performance
According to the WB, Peru's GDP will increase 7.6% this year, followed by Colombia and Argentina (4.9%), Chile (4.2%), Bolivia (3.9%), Mexico (3.7%), Ecuador (3.5%), Uruguay (3.4%), Paraguay (3.3%) and Brazil (3%).

Only Saint Lucia and Guyana will achieve higher expansion rates compared to Peru, closing with 7.8% and 8.1%, respectively.

The multilateral agency forecasted that the Latin American and Caribbean economy will expand by 3.7% this year, as the pandemic mitigation initiatives become more flexible, vaccines are distributed, prices of the main commodities stabilize and external conditions improve.

“However, the recovery will be very weak and occurs after a decade of weak growth. In a negative scenario, in which vaccine delivery is late, with secondary economic effects, the economic growth may be even lower than 1.9%,” it specified.

Furthermore, the WB estimated that the world economy will grow by 4%, after an expected decline of 4.3% in 2020.

“The global economy is expected to expand by 4% in 2021, assuming that the initial delivery of covid-19 vaccines broadens over the course of the year,” it specified in its report.

“However, the recovery is likely to be moderate unless policymakers act decisively to control the pandemic and implement investment-boosting reforms,” it added.

The President of the World Bank Group, David Malpass, said that while the global economy appears to have entered a moderate recovery, policymakers face enormous challenges regarding public health, debt management, budgetary policies, central banking and structural reforms to ensure that this fragile global growth gains ground and creates the basis for solid growth.
