THE PORT OF CHANCAY WILL HAVE A GREAT REGIONAL IMPACT AND WILL BE A HUB OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC

November 24, 2021. Lima, Peru.- The new Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal that is being built, will have a regional impact by becoming a Hub in the South Pacific and will allow the redistribution of cargo to other nearby countries such as Chile, Ecuador and Colombia, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) said today.

The future port is located 80 kilometers north of the city of Lima, in the town of Chancay and will also decongest the access roads to the port of Callao, generating opportunities for cargo from the east and central highlands, and raising its competitiveness compared to other markets. 

Currently, the company Cosco Shipping, in coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Communications, is drilling the tunnel, which has a length of 1.8 kilometers. In addition, it has been carrying out works in the port area and in the entrance complex. 

It will be a port that will move cargo in containers, bulk (solids and liquids) and rolling.  The megaproject consists of three main components. One of them is the port operating area, where the port activities will be carried out. 

This includes breakwater docks, maritime inflow channels, maintenance areas and workshops, as well as storage spaces for containers and bulk and rolling cargo.   

The second component is the entrance complex and includes the vehicular ante-port, entrance gates, customs inspection area, administrative offices and logistics and support services areas. It is located to the east of the operational area at a distance of approximately 2 kilometers.

The third component is the underground tunnel that connects the entrance complex with the port operating area. It will have a length of 1.8 kilometers and will constitute a segregated and exclusive road corridor for cargo transit related to the port operation.  It will have three vehicular lanes, two conveyor belts for solid bulk and liquid bulk pipes.    

The megaproject will be executed in stages: the first will be developed in an area of 141 hectares and includes the construction of an access road interchange from the Pan-American Highway to the vehicular ante-port, the tunnel connecting with the operational area and the entrance complex.

Likewise, in the operational area, the maritime channels for approaching and ships maneuver, the abrigo sur breakwater of Punta Chancay and the first four moorings will be built.
 
Mario de las Casas Vizquerra, public affairs manager of Cosco Shipping, indicated that this work will be a modern terminal, well equipped and with the capacity to receive container ships (carrying 18,000 containers) from the Asian region.

With this project, Peru aims to become Asia's hub in the South Pacific. This mega work of private investment, which drives the MTC, will directly benefit the citizens of Chancay. 

The investment of the project in its first stage amounts to US$ 1,213 million (without VAT), while in its final conception it will exceed US$ 3,600 million.
